PART 16: THE SHIPYARD STRATAGEM

The abandoned industrial shipyard in Boston harbor looked like a rotting iron skeleton rising from the black, freezing ocean waters.

At exactly 2:00 a.m., the thick coastal fog rolled across the cracked concrete docks, reducing visibility to less than ten feet.

I walked down the center of the main pier entirely alone, my long black trench coat billowing in the fierce Atlantic wind.

In my left hand, I held the glowing titanium drive containing the complete, unedited chemical synthesis logs of Project Morpheus.

My steps echoed sharply against the rusted iron plates of the dock, a solitary rhythm cutting through the howling storm.

Suddenly, two blinding spotlights erupted from the deck of a massive, blacked-out commercial vessel anchored at the end of the pier.

Four heavily armed Apex Group mercenaries emerged from the shadows of a crane, their rifles trained directly on my forehead.

Stepfather Victor Hale’s old warnings about high society's absolute ruthlessness flashed through my mind, but I didn't flinch.

Mark stepped out from behind the armed guards, dressed in a pristine white lab coat that looked grotesque against the filthy shipyard.

Beside him stood a tall, elegant woman with sharp features and cold blue eyes—the legendary global chairperson of The Apex Group, Victoria Cross.

“You are precisely on time, Selena,” Victoria Cross murmured, her voice carrying an aristocratic British accent that dripped with malice.

“The Apex Group values structural punctuality almost as much as we value absolute, proprietary scientific dominance.”

“Where is my daughter, Mark?” I demanded, ignoring the chairperson entirely as I locked my eyes onto my ex-husband's face.

Mark let out a soft, mocking chuckle, gesturing toward the heavy steel cabin doors of the commercial vessel behind him.

“She is safe inside the ship’s medical laboratory, Selena. We are already prepping her for the final synchronization sequence.”

“The moment you hand over that titanium drive, the chairperson has authorized her immediate release back into your custody.”

“You expect me to believe the promises of corporate monsters who execute prison breakouts and kidnap children?” I asked coldly.

Victoria Cross took a step forward, a patronizing smile playing on her lips as she extended her gloved hand for the drive.

“You have absolutely no leverage left to negotiate with, Dr. Vance. Your asset networks are frozen, and your security teams are broken.”

“Hand over the project drive, or watch your daughter's mind become an empty room from which she can never return.”

I slowly raised my left arm, holding the glowing titanium drive right beneath the intense glare of the mercenary spotlights.

“The drive is fully active, Victoria,” I announced, my voice sounding entirely calm, entirely commanding in the freezing wind.

“But the moment my thumb releases this biometric sensor, a localized wireless broadcast will instantly upload the data to every federal server in the world.”
