PART 9: THE PRISONER'S GAMBIT

The visiting room of the state maximum-security penitentiary smelled of cheap floor wax, stale coffee, and systemic despair.

I sat behind a thick sheet of scratched, reinforced plexiglass, my hands clasped tightly together on the cold metal counter.

The heavy iron door on the opposite side groaned open, and Mark was led into the room by two heavily armed guards.

He was dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands shackled to a heavy chain wrapped tightly around his waist.

He looked thinner, his skin pale from the lack of sunlight, but his eyes still carried the same arrogant, clinical intelligence.

He sat down slowly, picking up the plastic telephone receiver with a metallic clink, a smug smile spreading across his face.

“I knew you would eventually come to your senses and visit me, Selena,” Mark said, his voice coming through the static of the line.

“You look incredibly tired, my dear. The coastal air must not be agreeing with your delicate, dramatic disposition.”

“Cut the performance, Mark,” I replied, my voice dropping into a freezing register that caused his smile to falter slightly.

“Your shadow lawyers deployed Protocol 7. They wiped my bank accounts and targeted Sophie’s tablet at our cottage.”

Mark let out a soft, mocking chuckle, leaning forward until his forehead almost touched the scratched plexiglass divider.

“You always were far too emotional to understand the grand design of corporate logistics, Selena,” he whispered into the phone.

“Did you truly believe that a single federal raid could destroy a project backed by the most powerful men in the country?”

“Project Morpheus is bigger than me, it is bigger than Julian Croft, and it is certainly bigger than your pathetic morality.”

“The shadow board needs the final chemical synthesis logs that you hid before the FBI arrived at our old house.”

“If you deliver the encryption drive to my legal team, I will ensure the digital attacks stop, and you receive a massive allowance.”

“If you refuse, the appellate court will receive a beautifully fabricated piece of evidence next week that invalidates my arrest.”

“I will walk out of these gates a free man, Selena, and I will personally come to reclaim our daughter for the next phase of testing.”

The raw, unadulterated malice in his voice sent a momentary shiver through my spine, but I refused to let him see me break.

I leaned closer to the glass, my eyes locking onto his with a terrifying, calm intensity that he had never seen from me before.

“You aren't walking out of here, Mark. In fact, you aren't even going to survive the week inside this facility,” I said softly.

Mark’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, his fingers tightening around the plastic receiver. “What are you talking about?”

“You forgot that before my father retired, he chaired the federal committee that oversees private security contracts for this prison.”

“While you were busy using your lawyers to hack my bank accounts, my father’s network was busy reviewing your legal firm’s records.”

“We found the transaction logs, Mark. We found the proof that your attorneys have been paying off two of the guards in this cell block.”

“The federal prosecutors just authorized a complete raid on Vance-Croft Legal Partners. They are seizing the servers right now.”

“And do you know what the shadow board does to an asset who lets his operational files get captured by the FBI twice, Mark?”

Mark’s face instantly emptied of all color, his arrogant posture completely evaporating as the reality of the trap snapped shut.

“They liquidate the asset to ensure total operational security,” I whispered, watching his hands begin to shake against the counter.

“You aren't the architect of this game anymore, Mark. You are just a loose end that your own masters are about to cut away.”

I hung up the receiver, stood up from the metal chair, and walked out of the visiting room without looking back at his panicked face.
