Six months later, the Mateo Valenzuela Recovery Center officially opened its doors.
The modern glass-and-stone facility sat on a rolling green hill overlooking the northern bay, the water glistening under the morning sun.
It was a sanctuary built to provide emergency shelter, legal aid, and medical support to young mothers and pregnant women facing domestic peril.
Hundreds of guests stood on the lawn, applauding as the ribbon was cut.
I stood at the podium, wearing a simple cream dress, my hair catching the warm ocean breeze.
"This center was built from the ashes of a dynasty that believed power belonged to the cruel," I said into the microphone, my voice steady and resonant. "Today, we prove that true power belongs to the resilient."
As the crowd erupted into applause, Alejandro walked up the steps, holding Mateo in his arms.
Our son was wearing a small blue shirt, his tiny hands clapping along with the crowd.
Alejandro leaned down, pressing his lips against my temple.
"You did it, Meline," he murmured. "You turned their malice into a sanctuary."
