PART 14: THE ENVELOPE
A year passed, bringing us into the bright, clear spring of 2027.
Mateo was taking his first steady steps, his laughter filling our home with absolute joy.
One morning, a certified legal courier arrived at our porch, handing Alejandro a thick white envelope.
It bore the official stamp of the State Department of Corrections.
Alejandro opened it over breakfast, his face turning pale for a split second before his expression settled into cold focus.
"What is it, honey?" I asked, setting down his coffee.
"Paola's parole hearing," Alejandro said, his voice flat. "She’s completed her two years. They are evaluating her for early release under the mandatory protective injunction."
I sat beside him, looking at the printed notice.
The state was asking if the victims wished to submit a statement to the board.
Alejandro picked up a pen, his hand perfectly steady.
He wrote a single sentence on the official response form:
The injunction must remain absolute; her victims have moved into the light.

"She can't touch us anymore, Meline," he said, looking into my eyes. "The dark box she built has no key left."
