PART 13: THE VISITOR

PART 13: THE VISITOR

The winter of 2026 arrived with a gentle, soft snow that blanketed the bay in white.

One afternoon, a plain gray sedan pulled up to the center’s administrative office.

An elderly woman stepped out, wrapped in a faded woolen shawl.

It was Doña Victoria.

She looked fragile, her steps slow as she walked through the glass doors. She didn't ask for money. She didn't demand to see Alejandro.

She simply stood in the lobby, staring at the massive bronze plaque dedicated to the safety of mothers.

I stepped out of my office, watching her from the mezzanine level.

She looked up, her grey eyes meeting mine through the glass railing.

She didn't scream or accuse me.

She slowly lowered her head in a deep, submissive bow of total defeat and acknowledgement.

She had lost her wealth, her mansion, and her daughter to her own arrogance. But as she turned and walked back out into the cold snow alone, I realized she had finally found her conscience.

I didn't call after her.

I walked back to my desk, opening a new assistance file for a mother arriving that evening.
