Chapter 2 - THE CONTRACT’S FALL

The silence inside the Halcyon Grand Ballroom solidified into an impenetrable wall of absolute terror as Grant Vale stared at my father, Jonathan Hart, his hand still frozen near his mistress's trembling elbow.

Sloane Mercer took a staggering step backward, her empty wine glass clinking uselessly against the edge of a silver serving tray as she tried to find support against the cold wood of the stage.

"You must be out of your mind, Jonathan, because my family's logistics empire is the sole operator of the Midwest transit docks," Grant blustered, his voice cracking slightly under the sudden weight of a cold, suffocating panic.

"We have an active, non-negotiable lease on this ballroom, and your hotel staff has no legal right to disrupt our corporate launch."

"The lease was terminated exactly forty-two seconds ago when your companion threw that glass of red wine in my daughter's face, Grant," my father replied, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet frequency that seemed to instantly dim the brilliant crystal chandeliers above.

"My general manager has already initiated the emergency foreclosure protocols under Clause Fourteen of our standard commercial events contract, which nullifies all occupant protections in the event of documented physical harassment or violence."

"Furthermore, the security director has already secured the high-definition digital recordings from the northeast corner cameras to preserve the physical evidence of the assault."

Grant’s mother, Evelyn Vale, rushed forward from Table Three, her expensive diamond necklaces clattering against her chest as her face twisted into a pale, desperate mask of high-society panic.

"Jonathan, please, this is nothing more than a temporary domestic disagreement that has been blown entirely out of proportion by an emotional, pregnant woman!" she cried, her manicured hands clutching the lapels of my father's tuxedo jacket.

"We are old family friends, and we can easily settle this matter privately without involving the municipal police or ruining our corporate credit!"

"The only emotional person in this room is the husband who stood silent while his mistress humiliated the mother of his unborn children, Evelyn," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, freezing authority that made the guests near the front row whisper.

"And unfortunately for your family, my father’s legal team is not the only force that has been tracking your logistics firm's fraudulent transactions over the past eight months."

"I spent my entire pregnancy quietly auditing the secondary ledger files that Grant thought were safely locked behind the firewall of his private corporate server."

"And by noon tomorrow, the state treasury department is going to execute an emergency seizure on every single account registered to Vale Meridian."
