Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF VALE

The ninety-six hours of arrogant legal defenses the Vale family had prepared dissolved into a pathetic, high-pitched wail of pure, primitive terror.

As the federal marshals closed in on the platform, the heavy metallic click of the steel restraints closing around Grant’s wrists was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.

"Claire, please!" Evelyn sobbed, falling onto her knees on the Persian rug, her diamonds clinking uselessly against the polished floorboards.

"We are family! Think of our name! You cannot destroy my son's career over one bad second in a ballroom!"

"You didn't think of our name, Evelyn, when you smiled while your son's mistress threw red wine in my face in front of three hundred guests," I said, looking down at her with dead, unyielding eyes.

"You managed your greed, and when you couldn't control me, you tried to steal my father’s legacy to pay for your luxury."

The district attorney moved with a swift, clinical speed that left no room for high-society influence or political corporate bribes.

By Thursday afternoon, the state supreme court officially executed an emergency liquidation of all Vale Meridian operations.

Their personal assets were frozen, and their luxury estate was liquidated to pay the massive restitution fines to the families whose pensions they had exploited.

Their family name was permanently erased from the city's prestigious registries, leaving the conspirators to face twenty-five years in a federal maximum-security facility.

I stood in the quiet of my new private office, watching the evening sun paint the clean desk in shades of gold and amber.

The old locket on my neck caught the light, no longer a symbol of defense, but the foundation of our new, independent life.
