Chapter 7 - THE SOVEREIGN FUTURE

The sharp, crisp wind off the lake swept through the open terrace of my new oceanfront villa, carrying a sense of long-awaited, beautiful renewal.
Three months had passed since the final conclusion of the Vale corporate audit, and our family's name was completely restored to the honor roll.
I stood on the wide stone deck, wearing a simple, comfortable white linen suit, the afternoon sun painting the water in brilliant gold.
My daughter lay in her bassinet beside my chair, her cheeks bright and healthy, her breathing steady against the soft breeze.
My father walked out onto the terrace, carrying two fresh cups of coffee and a warm, respectful smile on his handsome face.
He handed one to me, his fingers gently brushing against mine with a steady, reassuring warmth that made my heart feel whole.
"The registry is permanently closed, Claire," my father said softly, his deep voice carrying a quiet, proud satisfaction.
"Grant and his mistress have both been sentenced to twenty-five years without the possibility of early parole, and the corporate foundation has been fully secured under your daughter's name."
"Thank you, Dad," I smiled, looking out at the massive ships moving slowly across the sparkling blue horizon of the ocean.
The cold ballroom and the single glass of wine of my husband's betrayal had burned away the final remnants of my naive submission.
