Chapter 3 - THE SECRET VAULT

The transition from a quiet, isolated wife to a calculated, lethal corporate adversary was completed before the hotel security team even finished escorting Sloane out of the grand ballroom.
I did not return to the luxury suburban estate I had shared with Grant, nor did I shed a single tear over the ruined emerald silk dress sitting in the back of my father's sedan.
Instead, I sat in the high-security executive offices of Hartwell Holdings, the early morning sun of Chicago painting the tall glass windows in cold, clinical shades of gray.
"The forensic accounting team spent the last twenty-four hours mapping the cash reserves of Vale Meridian, Claire," my father's senior investigator, Martin, said as he placed a thick, certified bank ledger on the metal table between us.
"They didn't just use your marriage as a public relations stunt; they had already prepared three separate shell company transfers to siphon your premarital trust fund to cover Grant's failed real estate investments in Panama."
"He forged your signature on a joint corporate debt guarantee, scheduling the transfer for precisely eight o'clock this morning," he added, his eyes flashing with a sharp, protective anger.
"They believed that because you were pregnant, because you were resting at home under high-risk medical supervision, you wouldn't bother to check the digital transaction logs," I stated, a dangerous, crystalline focus settling behind my eyes.
"They forgot that before I married Grant, I spent five years working as a senior compliance director for the Federal Securities Commission."

"The federal marshals have already been notified of the digital forgery," my father confirmed, a cold, satisfied smile touching his mouth as he handed me a fresh cup of coffee.
"The execution order has been signed, and by the time the market opens, Daniel will discover that the keys to his kingdom have been completely changed."
