Part 11: The Injunction

The legal battle over the hydraulic patent turned Portland into a corporate war zone by the end of the week. The federal judge issued a temporary injunction, freezing Apex Innovations’ manufacturing lines and putting Logan's royalty payments on hold. The financial squeeze was back, but this time, we weren't living in a small apartment with a leaking water heater. We had resources, and we had the truth.

I sat in the front row of the federal courtroom, holding Liam in my arms, while Logan stood beside the Apex legal team. Across the aisle sat Thomas Sterling and a dozen corporate attorneys representing Vance Medical Group.

Robert Wright was not in the courtroom. His chair at the plaintiff’s table remained empty.

"Your Honor," Thomas Sterling argued, his voice echoing through the grand marble hall with a polished, unshakeable authority. "The schematics utilized by Mr. Miller were developed while he was a student at the Wright Institute of Technology, a facility fully funded by our client. Under the standard intellectual property clauses of the institute, any mechanical or systemic innovation developed on those premises belongs entirely to the Wright foundation."

The Apex lead attorney stood up to counter, but Logan gently raised his hand, stopping him. He stepped forward to the podium himself, turning his head to look directly at Sterling.

"I didn't design this lift at the institute, Mr. Sterling," Logan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, completely devoid of the panic that had consumed him days ago. "I designed it in a basement apartment in a small town three hours north of here. I designed it because the shop I was working at had a collapsed hydraulic line that nearly crushed a twenty-two-year-old apprentice mechanic to death because your medical group refused to approve the safety funding for independent garages."

A murmur rippled through the gallery. The reporters in the back row began typing furiously on their laptops.

"Mr. Miller, this court requires documentation, not narrative," the judge warned, leaning forward over his bench.

"I have the documentation, Your Honor," Logan said smoothly, reaching into his leather folder and pulling out a small, grease-stained logbook. "This is the daily maintenance ledger from Miller's Automotive in clear view of the interstate. Every single calculation, every single hydraulic valve modification was logged here, timestamped and signed by the shop owner, three months after I severed all ties with the Wright foundation. If the plaintiff wants to claim this IP, they will have to explain why their multi-million-dollar medical group is trying to steal the journal of a mechanic who was earning minimum wage."

The judge reviewed the logbook, his expression turning sharp as he looked over at Thomas Sterling. Sterling’s usual calm composure fractured for a fraction of a second, his eyes shifting toward the back door of the courtroom.

"The injunction is lifted," the judge announced, his gavel striking the desk with a definitive, final thud. "The case is dismissed with prejudice. Vance Medical Group will cover all legal fees incurred by the defense."

Logan didn't celebrate. He didn't look at the reporters rushing out the doors. He simply organized his files back into his folder, walked over to the gallery, and took Liam from my arms, kissing his forehead with a quiet, unyielding pride.
