Part 19: The New Foundation

A year later, the opening of the Liam Miller Safety Center in northern Oregon marked the final completion of our long journey. The modern, state-of-the-art facility stood proudly near the interstate, surrounded by rolling green hills and a wide, open sky. It was a place designed to train young mechanics, provide free technical certifications, and manufacture subsidized hydraulic components for independent shops across the country.

The dedication ceremony was packed with local families, mechanics in grease-stained canvas jackets, and city officials. I stood on the raised wooden stage beside Logan, who was holding the microphone, his face calm and resolute under the bright morning sun.

"This center wasn't built by a corporate transaction," Logan said into the microphone, his voice echoing clearly across the crowd. "It was built because eight years ago, a mechanic in a basement apartment realized that running from a legacy doesn't change it. You have to stand your ground, face the shadows, and build something that belongs entirely to the truth."

The crowd erupted into a roaring applause, the sound of independent shop whistles and clapping hands filling the wide air.

In the front row of the gallery sat Robert Wright, surrounded by his personal medical assistants, clapping proudly with his left hand against his knee. Beside him sat my sister Marianne, who had helped us manage the legal and financial foundations of the center from the very beginning.

As we walked off the stage, Liam ran up to us, clutching his red wooden car tightly in his tiny fist. Logan lifted him up, spinning him around in the warm afternoon air, his laughter loud and free against the open sky.
