Plot twist

Part 2: Secrets of the Family Tree

The name Logan hung in the sterile air of the delivery room like an unexploded bomb. My heart hammered against my ribs, the rhythmic beep of the vital signs monitor suddenly spiking into a frantic, erratic tempo.

"You... you know Logan?" I stammered, clutching the thin hospital blanket tightly against my chest.

Dr. Wright didn't answer right away. He turned to the stunned nurses behind him, his professional voice cracking but firm. "Give us the room. Please. Just... give us a moment."

The staff glanced at each other, sensing the heavy, dangerous layer of personal drama that had just derailed the room, and quietly backed out, letting the heavy doors click shut behind them. The room became suffocatingly quiet, save for the soft cooing of my newborn son.

Dr. Wright walked over to the bassinet where the nurse had carefully laid my baby. He stared down at the child’s face, tracing the tiny, distinct cleft in the boy's chin and the tuft of dark, wavy hair—the exact features that had mirrored the man who abandoned me in our apartment seven months ago.

"Logan is my son," Dr. Wright spoke quietly, his voice hollow and heavy with a decade of grief. He didn't look at me; his eyes stayed locked on the infant. "Or, at least... he was. I haven't seen or spoken to him in nearly eight years."

My jaw dropped. The city of Mercy Creek wasn't small, but the reality of the coincidence felt entirely impossible, like a twisted script written by an unforgiving fate. "Your son? He never mentioned he had family here. He told me his parents died when he was a teenager."

"That’s the story he tells everyone because it’s easier than the truth," Dr. Wright said, finally turning his wet, steel-gray eyes toward me. He pulled a rolling stool over to my bedside, sinking into it as if his legs could no longer carry the weight of his thoughts. "Logan didn't run away from you because he didn't want a baby, Joanna. He ran because he is terrified of me. And looking at this child... I finally understand why."

He rubbed his face with his hands, the exhaustion of a lifetime catching up to him in a single afternoon. "Eight years ago, Logan was engaged to a young woman from a wealthy political family in Chicago. It was a merger I arranged. I pressured him, manipulated his career, and monitored his choices until he felt entirely suffocated. When his fiancée tragically passed away in an accident, Logan blamed my control for pushing them over the edge. The night of her funeral, he looked me in the eyes, told me I would never see his face again, and vanished into the wind."

Dr. Wright reached down, his large, calloused hand gently brushing the edge of the baby's swaddle. "I spent millions trying to track him down, hiring private investigators, searching every database from coast to coast. Nothing. He changed his social security number, took his mother's maiden name, and buried his past so deeply I thought he was dead."

He looked at me, a mixture of profound sorrow and sudden, desperate hope flickering in his eyes. "And then today, you walk into my hospital alone. You give birth to a boy who carries the exact genetic imprint of the Wright family line. Joanna... where is my son?"
