Part 13: The Medical Proxy

The monitor beside the bed began to blare with a sharp, high-pitched alarm as Robert’s heart rate spiked into a dangerous arrhythmia. The double doors of the ICU burst open, and a team of neurologists and trauma surgeons rushed into the room, their faces pale with panic.

"Dr. Wright’s executive directive specifies no artificial life support unless authorized by the family proxy," the attending physician shouted, looking directly at Logan with absolute desperation. "Mr. Miller, his brain is swelling. We need to perform an emergency craniectomy right now to relieve the pressure, or he won't survive the next ten minutes. We need your signature."

Logan looked at the medical consent form thrust into his hand, then looked down at his father, who was now drifting into unconsciousness, his breathing becoming shallow and erratic. The entire room went silent, every doctor and nurse waiting to see if the estranged son would use this moment to let the tyrant die.

Logan looked over at me. I stood by the door, holding Liam tightly against my chest, nodding slowly.

"Don't let him die in the dark, Logan," I whispered.

Logan turned back to the physician, his jaw clenching as he grabbed a pen and signed his name at the bottom of the legal document with a fierce, decisive stroke. "Do the surgery. Save him."

The medical team moved with lightning efficiency, wheeling the bed out of the room and down the bright hallway toward the surgical suites, leaving Logan standing alone in the empty ICU room under the harsh fluorescent lights.

He walked over to the window, leaning his forehead against the cold glass, his shoulders shaking as twenty-five years of repressed grief and anger finally broke through his defenses. I walked over and wrapped my arms around him, letting him weep into my shoulder while the rain lashed against the hospital glass outside.
