PART 2: THE SECRETS IN THE OAK CLIFF SHED

The heart monitor’s alarm suddenly felt like a siren warning of an impending explosion.

Emily stood up slowly from Noah’s bedside, her eyes locked onto her mother.

Margaret’s hand remained pressed against her mouth, but the mask of the grieving grandmother had completely slipped, revealing a calculating, desperate panic.

Beside her, Madison looked as if she were about to faint, her fingers digging into the fabric of her dark jacket.

"What does he mean, Mother?" Emily asked, her voice dangerously quiet, dropping into a tone she had never used with her family before. "What other kids?"

"He's... he's delirious, Emily!" Margaret stammered, backing away until her shoulder hit the door frame. "He had a terrible fall. He’s concussed! You can't trust what a traumatized six-year-old says!"

"He isn't delirious, Mrs. Carter," Detective Ramirez said, stepping in front of the door, effectively blocking Margaret and Madison from leaving. He lowered his camera, his eyes scanning Margaret's pale face. "And a concussion doesn't explain why your neighbor heard children crying inside a locked structures on your property three days ago."

Emily turned back to Noah, gently stroking his uninjured hand. "Noah, buddy, tell Mommy. Who else is in the shed?"

"The little girls," Noah whispered, his voice cracking. "The ones Grandma brings over when the big vans come at night. They don't have toys, Mommy. They don't have blankets. Grandma told me if I gave them my dinosaur pajamas, she would lock me in the dark box too."

The puzzle pieces crashed together in Emily's mind with brutal, nauseating clarity.

Margaret’s sudden offer to watch Noah for three days.

Madison staying at the house despite hating the Oak Cliff property.

The locked shed that Noah had always warned her made "bad sounds" at night.

They weren't just neglecting her son; they were using her business trip as a cover to run an illegal, highly profitable human trafficking network directly out of their suburban backyard.

"Madison," Emily said, looking at her younger sister. "Tell me the truth. Right now."

Madison broke down, falling against the wall as she sobbed hysterically. "I didn't want to, Emily! Mom said we needed the money! The debts from the estate were too high! They were going to take the house!"

"Shut up, Madison!" Margaret screamed, her voice losing all its previous high-society polish. "Don't say another word!"

"Detective," Emily said, her chest heaving as she stood tall, shielding Noah's bed with her own body. "Get them out of my sight. And go to that house."

Ramirez didn't hesitate. He pulled his radio from his belt, barking commands to his dispatch team. "All units, execute the emergency search warrant at the Oak Cliff property immediately. Breaching team required. We have potential juvenile victims inside a locked structure."

As two uniform officers entered the ICU room to escort Margaret and Madison out in handcuffs, Margaret stopped, glaring at Emily with pure venom. "You think you're saving him, Emily? You just destroyed this family. You'll have nothing left when I'm done with you."

"I have my son," Emily whispered, her voice like ice. "And that's more than you'll ever have in a cell."
