The next morning, Marcus Vance stood before Emily's desk, his expression uncharacteristically grim. "The offshore entity, Acheron Holdings, isn't a new creation, Emily. I ran the registration history. It was incorporated twenty years ago by your father’s original business partner—Arthur Pendelton."
Emily stared at him in disbelief. "Arthur Pendelton died in a plane crash over the Gulf of Mexico when I was twelve. My father went to his funeral."
"That’s what the public records say," Marcus replied, sliding a folder across the desk. "But the death certificate was signed by a private coroner in Panama who vanished two weeks later. Arthur didn't die. He went underground, and for the last two decades, Margaret was paying him hush money to keep his name off the Carter family assets."
