With Arthur behind bars, the foundation’s assets were finally secure, but his final warning haunted Emily. Two weeks later, Madison Carter called from the federal correctional facility in Fort Worth. She refused to speak to anyone but Emily.
Emily sat behind the scratched plexiglass window, holding the telephone receiver. On the other side, Madison looked gaunt, her glamorous past completely erased by the harsh realities of prison life.
"Arthur was telling the truth, Emily," Madison whispered, her hands shaking. "Margaret had a silent partner in the state senate. Someone who protected the Oak Cliff house for years. He’s running for Governor now, and he knows you have the ledger."
