Chapter 14 - The Convergence
I wasn't surprised when I saw Daniel’s car pull up to the office building.
He stepped out, looking not like a villain, but like a tired man.
He didn't have his guards.
He didn't have his arrogance.
He walked toward me, his movements slow.
"You really did it," he said, his voice devoid of anger.
"I had to," I replied.
"You knew this would cause a crisis?"
"I knew it would end the control."
He stood in front of me, the rain beginning to fall.
"You think you’ve won, Claire?"
"I think I’ve ended the game."
"The game never ends," he whispered.
"It just finds a new player."
He looked at my daughter, who was asleep in the back of the investigator's car.
"She’ll never know the power she was entitled to."
"She’ll know how to be free," I said.
He nodded, a gesture that looked like a final surrender.
