Chapter 16 - The Echo

Five years had passed.

I was living in a quiet suburban home, the rhythm of my life steady and predictable.

One morning, a letter arrived without a return address.

It contained a single key and an address in the city.

I knew who it was from.

I ignored it for weeks, but the temptation was too strong.

I drove to the address—a small, nondescript storage facility.

I unlocked the unit.

Inside was a single box, containing all the records of the Net—the ones Daniel had kept hidden even from me.

I realized then that he had left me his legacy, not as a gift, but as a test.

I sat on the cold floor, the papers scattered around me.

I wasn't the victim anymore.

I was the keeper of the secrets.
