Chapter 8 - The Price of Absolute Control

Daniel returned to the office, finding me still staring at the glowing monitor.

The silence between us was profound.

He didn't look surprised.

He walked over, his expression unreadable, and closed the laptop.

"You weren't supposed to see that yet," he said, his voice flat.

"What is this, Daniel?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

"It’s security," he replied.

"It’s how we ensure that no one ever threatens us again."

"By owning everyone?"

"By ensuring that everyone’s future is tied to ours," he said.

"We don't live in a world where mercy is an asset, Claire."

"We live in a world where leverage is everything."

I looked at him, realizing that the man I had married had been transformed by the fire.

He had seen the darkness, and he had decided that the only way to survive it was to become the source of the light—or the source of the shadow.

"You're not the man I thought I knew," I whispered.

"I’m the man I had to become to keep you safe," he countered.

I felt a deep, aching sadness.

We had won, but the victory had cost us our innocence.

The net was perfectly balanced.

But the price of absolute control was a life lived in constant, calculated solitude.

I realized then that we had finally escaped the liars, only to become the very thing we had sought to destroy.
