Chapter 6 - The Unseen Architect

Life in the quiet coastal cottage began to settle into a rhythm.
The constant hum of corporate politics was replaced by the sound of the ocean.
Daniel took a position with a humanitarian firm that focused on protecting victims of financial fraud.
He was good at it.
He understood the language of deception.
I spent my days working on the restoration of our family home.
It was a slow process, but it was cathartic.
Every wall we rebuilt felt like an erasure of the past.
But someone was watching.
I noticed the black car parked at the end of our lane every morning.
It never moved.
It never approached the house.
It was just… there.
I mentioned it to Daniel over coffee, but he dismissed it as a residual security measure.
"The firm keeps eyes on the threat," he said.
"They want to make sure Patricia’s associates stay away."
But I knew better.
The car felt different.
It was too still.
Too observant.
I began to keep a journal of every time it appeared.
The license plate was registered to a holding company that didn't exist.
The driver was always the same man, wearing a hat that obscured his features.
I felt a phantom chill every time I glanced toward the end of our lane.
The empire had collapsed, but the shadows were still waiting.

I realized that we had successfully defeated the players, but we hadn't defeated the board.
The board was still there, watching our every move.
