Part 10: The Verdict of Ash

The jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation. The room was so quiet you could hear the distant traffic outside the stone courthouse windows.

"On the count of premeditated attempted murder, we find the defendant, Serena Rivas, guilty," the foreperson announced clearly. "On the count of grand larceny, guilty. On the count of corporate identity theft, guilty."

The judge, a stern woman with silver hair, looked down over her glasses at Serena with an expression of profound, unyielding disgust.

"Serena Rivas, your actions represent a level of calculated cruelty that this court rarely witnesses," the judge said, her voice dropping like a hammer. "You abused the sanctity of a family, poisoned a defenseless mother, and attempted to steal an inheritance meant for generations. I sentence you to twenty-eight years in a federal maximum-security facility without the possibility of early parole."

The gavel came down with a definitive, deafening crack.

Serena screamed—a sharp, desperate sound that was instantly cut off as two bailiffs clicked the heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists and led her through the side doors toward the holding cells. Julian, her brother, had already entered a guilty plea hours earlier, receiving a fifteen-year sentence for his role in the wire transfers.

I stood up from my seat slowly, my posture straight and commanding. I looked across the empty courtroom, feeling the final lingering shadow of the past twelve months leave my body completely. The fortress our family had built was safe, the treason had been purged, and the Kingsley legacy belonged completely to my son.
