Part 9: The Trial of Serena Rivas

The federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was completely surrounded by members of the international press when the trial commenced three weeks later. The scandal had shaken the financial elite, transforming the once-celebrated philanthropist Serena Rivas into the face of corporate greed and domestic malice.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an elegant white suit, my hair styled perfectly, completely free of the silk scarf I had used to hide my degradation weeks ago. Damian sat beside me, his uniform decorated with his full military honors, his eyes fixed heavily on the defense table.
Across the room sat Serena. The arrogant, untouchable queen of high society looked entirely hollowed out. Her designer clothes had been replaced by a standard gray detention blazer, her hair unkempt, and her eyes wide with a frantic, pale terror as the prosecutor began displaying our evidence on the projection screens.
The hidden camera footage from our apartment was played first—the crystal-clear video of Serena carefully tapping the thallium drops into my teacup before smiling at her reflection in the mirror. A collective gasp echoed through the crowded courtroom, several of her former high-society friends covering their mouths in horror.

"The defendant didn't just commit corporate fraud, your Honor," the federal prosecutor announced, his voice booming through the silent room. "She systematically attempted to execute the matriarch of the Kingsley family to fund an illegal gambling ring in Southeast Asia. She used her position of trust to turn a home into a slow-motion execution chamber."
Serena let out a sharp, broken sob, burying her face in her hands as her defense attorney desperately tried to argue for a psychological evaluation. But the paper trail, the text messages, and the medical forensic data were absolute. The woman who had spent years treating me like a stepping stone had finally run completely out of lies.
