Part 14: The Geneva Transaction

Three days later, Damian and I were sitting in the private, wood-paneled vault of the Banque de Neuflize in Geneva, Switzerland. The windows overlooked the grey, pristine waters of Lake Geneva, the air cool and silent, completely removed from the chaotic noise of Wall Street.
The Swiss bank director, an elegant man named Henri Dupond, placed a heavy, brass mechanical coding device onto the velvet table between us.
"Mrs. Kingsley, Captain Kingsley," Dupond said, offering a deep, respectful bow. "Your father's instructions were absolute. The Geneva reserve can only be unlocked if both the matriarch's biometric signature and the heir's military authentication key are processed simultaneously. The funds have remained untouched for twenty-eight years."
Damian stepped forward, inserting his military clearance token into the slot, while I placed my right palm flat against the glowing glass scanner of the device.
The vault door behind us let out a deep, heavy mechanical click, the massive steel cylinders rotating smoothly to reveal rows of glittering gold bullion and certified sovereign bonds stamped with the official seal of the Swiss Confederation.

"With this reserve, Damian," I said, my voice echoing off the concrete walls, "Kingsley Financial doesn't just manage wealth in Chicago. We hold the collateral for the very banks that fund our competitors. We are entirely independent of the federal banking system."
Damian looked at the gold, his jaw setting into an expression of intense, unshakeable pride. "They thought they could look at our family and see weakness, Mother. But they had no idea we were sitting on an empire that could buy their entire city."
