Part 6: The Anatomy of a Poison

By 9:00 AM, the private conference room at the state prosecutor's office was locked down. I sat at the head of the table, with Damian standing directly behind my chair, his presence a silent, protective wall. Across from us sat Marcus Vance, our family’s long-time legal counsel, alongside the district attorney.
"The evidence is ironclad, Mrs. Kingsley," the district attorney said, opening a thick manila folder filled with lab reports and financial flowcharts. "We tracked the text messages between Serena and her brother, Julian. They weren't just trying to make you look mentally incompetent to secure the trust; they had already prepared a falsified medical proxy that would allow them to commit you to a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland the moment Damian signed the corporate restructuring papers."
"And the money?" Damian asked, his jaw tight.
"Julian had already established a routing network through a casino group in Manila," Marcus Vance answered, sliding a digital tablet toward us. "The plan was to transfer forty million dollars from the Kingsley Family Trust’s offshore reserve the day after Damian stepped down as CEO. Harold Montgomery was going to validate the transaction from the banking side in exchange for a twenty-percent write-off on his personal debts."
I looked at the digital display, a cold, calculated smile touching my lips. Montgomery hadn't just been acting out of corporate fear during the board meeting; he was actively protecting his own piece of the crime.
"Montgomery thought he was saving his seat at the table," I whispered, my fingers tracing the silver edge of my phone. "Marcus, I want the immediate liquidation of every single commercial loan Kingsley Financial holds over Montgomery’s real estate portfolio. By noon, I want his personal assets frozen under a corporate embezzlement injunction."
"Consider it done, Mrs. Kingsley," Marcus replied, a look of grim satisfaction on his face.

"What about Serena?" Damian asked, looking down at me.
"Serena is going to learn exactly how the legal system handles grand larceny and premeditated murder attempts," I said smoothly. "She spent a year treating my body like a laboratory. Now, she’s going to spend the next two decades inside a cell."
