Part 17: The Ghost in the System

The peace we cultivated in Maine was absolute, but the digital matrix of a multi-billion-dollar empire never truly sleeps. Two years after Serena's conviction, our internal cybersecurity unit flagged an anomalous encryption attempt originating from a private server housed inside a psychiatric hospital in Zurich, Switzerland.
I sat in my study, the glowing monitors illuminating the dark wood panels of the room. Damian stood beside me, his arms crossed over a black tactical jacket, his face set in a hard, dangerous line.
"The server belongs to a holding company managed by Julian’s former defense attorney," Damian explained, tapping the screen to reveal a series of encrypted code blocks. "Someone was attempting to activate an old automated script designed to release a batch of falsified corporate documents regarding our 2012 transactions to the European press. It's a dead man's switch, Mother."
"Serena is trying to negotiate a reduction in her sentence from her cell by threatening a public relations leak," I said, a cold, clinical smile touching my lips. "She still thinks she can use our past to bargain for her freedom."
"I've already contacted our cyber-intelligence team in Berlin," Damian said, his voice dropping into that lethal, quiet military register. "They didn't just block the encryption; they traced the source files directly back to the attorney's private drive. We have the origin logs, the payment receipts from the Macau casino accounts, and the signed authorization letters from Julian."

"We aren't going to play defense, Damian," I said, closing the laptop with a definitive snap. "We are going to execute a complete counter-audit. Marcus, file a formal obstruction of justice charge against the Zurich firm. By sunrise, I want that attorney disbarred, his servers seized by the Swiss federal police, and Serena's visitation rights permanently revoked under a national security directive."
The response from our network was immediate. Within six hours, the Zurich server went completely dark, and the final ghost of Serena's malice was permanently scrubbed from the global system.
